Team profile

Mexico

The Mexican men’s U23 team has been seriously working hard for the FIVB Volleyball Men’s U23 World Championship since confirming their participation through the U23 Pan American Cup in La Habana, Cuba, in 2014 when they defeated the Dominican Republic in the tiebreaker. Some players of the team saw international action in the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Cup qualifier in Detroit, USA, the FIVB Volleyball World League and the Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada.

Juan Roberto Vilches More

Cuban-born Juan Roberto Vilches was named coach of the men’s senior and U23 teams. He was one of the biggest influences in some of Mexico’s most important players such as Ivan Contreras, Gustavo Meyer, Mario Becerra and Jesus Reynold. Vilches shifted his passion for the sport from playing to coaching when he retired 10 years ago. In October 2014, he was entrusted to lead the U23 Mexican team at the Pan American Cup in Cuba to seek one of the two tickets in NORCECA for the FIVB Volleyball Men’s U23 World Championship. Vilches believes that the U23 programme of Mexico must support the senior team with the desire to defend the national flag.
